Belt Velocity Formula

To calculate the surface speed of a belt moving over a pulley, we use the following mechanical engineering formula:

Belt Speed = π × Pulley Diameter × Pulley RPM

  • π (Pi): Approximately 3.14159.
  • Pulley Diameter: The outer diameter of the driving pulley (usually in mm).
  • Pulley RPM: Revolutions per minute of the driving shaft.

For standard industrial applications, thickness is often ignored. However, for precision timing belts or very thick belts, the "Effective Diameter" (Pulley Diameter + 1/2 Belt Thickness) should be used for the most accurate velocity.

Slippage occurs when the friction between the pulley and belt is insufficient. This is usually due to low tension, contaminated surfaces, or a pulley diameter that is too small for the belt's flexibility.

How do I change the belt speed for better efficiency?
